If you’re buying albums, photocards, or other merch in Myeongdong, several stores offer an immediate VAT deduction right at the register instead of making you claim it back at the airport. Here’s what the actual rule covers — and what it doesn’t.

The real transaction limits

The current governing rule is a special provision under Presidential Decree No. 35947 (effective January 2, 2026), Article 10-2. It sets two limits for the instant, at-register refund:

  • A single transaction must be under 1,000,000 KRW to qualify for the immediate deduction.
  • Your total refunded amount across a visit is capped at 5,000,000 KRW.

Older claims floating around about a specific minimum purchase amount for this scheme aren’t reflected in the current article — don’t plan your shopping around a number you haven’t confirmed with the store directly.

It’s not K-pop-specific

This is the standard tax-free retail scheme, not something unique to K-pop stores. It applies broadly to eligible tax-free retailers, and most major record shops and merch stores selling to tourists participate — but confirm the specific store is registered before you assume the discount applies.

What to expect at checkout

Passport verification is part of the process, but exactly how a given store handles it — a scan, a manual check, other ID details — varies by retailer. Ask before you’re mid-transaction if you want to know what to have ready.

For where to shop for K-pop merch in the first place, including which districts have the highest concentration of tax-free-registered stores, see Koursea’s official K-pop merchandise shopping guide.

Confirm that the store participates

Immediate refund is available only through participating tax-refund retailers; it is not automatic at every album or merchandise shop. Look for the tax-refund mark and ask the cashier before payment. Present the passport or approved verification method requested by the store, then check that the deducted tax or refund information appears on the receipt.

The Korea Tourism Organization’s current comprehensive tax-refund guide states that immediate-refund eligibility is verified at purchase and distinguishes it from downtown, airport, mailbox and mobile refund routes. It also lists a minimum purchase amount and transaction/stay limits. Because tax rules and retailer systems can change, the current official guide and the store’s live checkout determine eligibility.

Keep an exit-day backup

Save the receipt and keep eligible goods available in case the transaction requires later customs or refund processing. Do not open or consume goods if the applicable procedure requires them to remain unused. If the immediate deduction does not apply, ask whether the store can issue a regular tax-refund document rather than assuming the purchase is ineligible.
